I’ve always found that some of the best travel experiences come from the journey itself, not just the destination. The drive to Forest Sky Pier at Sealy Lookout in Coffs Harbour was a perfect testament to this. Nestled in the lush greenery of the Orara East State Forest, the Sky Pier offers breathtaking views and an immersive nature experience. But before you even set foot on the pier, the drive up to Sealy Lookout is an adventure in its own right.
The Scenic Drive
As I began my ascent towards Sealy Lookout following a walk along the Jetty taking a left turn after the Big Banana, the road started to wind through the picturesque landscape. The route takes you through expansive banana plantations, a signature feature of the Coffs Harbour region. The sight of banana trees stretching out as far as the eye can see is both tranquil and exhilarating, giving a glimpse into the agricultural heart of this area.
The road, though winding, is well-maintained and offers a series of turns and bends that add to the excitement. With each twist and turn, the scenery seems to change, keeping you engaged and intrigued about what lies ahead. The banana plantations gradually give way to dense, verdant rainforests. The air grows cooler and fresher, filled with the rich, earthy scent of the forest. Sunlight filters through the canopy, creating dappled patterns on the road and highlighting the lush undergrowth.
Arrival at Sealy Lookout
Reaching the top, I found ample parking at Sealy Lookout. The first thing that struck me was the peacefulness of the place. Away from the hustle and bustle of the city, Sealy Lookout feels like a world apart. It’s not just the destination, but also the anticipation that builds during the drive, that makes arriving here so special. There is a small cafe which was closed, luckily i travel the van life and have a burner handy.
The Forest Sky Pier
The Forest Sky Pier is an architectural marvel that blends seamlessly with its natural surroundings. Constructed primarily of steel and timber, the pier extends 21 meters (about 69 feet) out from the escarpment, offering an incredible vantage point. Situated at an elevation of 310 meters (1,017 feet) above sea level, it provides panoramic views that are nothing short of spectacular.
Stepping onto the pier, I felt like I was walking out into the sky itself. The views stretched out getting a 180° of the coastline, encompassing the city of Coffs Harbour, the sparkling blue of the Solitary Islands, and the rolling hills of the hinterland. On a clear day, you can see for miles, with the horizon blending seamlessly into the ocean.
A Photographer’s Paradise

Whether you’re an amateur photographer with a smartphone or a professional with a high-end camera, the Sky Pier’s vistas provide a perfect backdrop for photos that will make your friends and family back home green with envy.

Each path seemed to lead to a new discovery, whether it was a hidden waterfall, a unique plant species, or a breathtaking view.
